Collingwood rested for BD Test series

LONDON: England Twenty20 skipper Paul Collingwood will be rested for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh after a tough winter and a successful Twenty20 World Cup campaign.

The 33-year-old had also been treating his long-standing shoulder problem, which had been troubling him recently, and was the reason behind his absence in the one-day series against Australia last summer.

Meanwhile, fast bowler Stuart Broad will be left out of next week’s first Test against Bangladesh to help the selection panel to review some inexperienced players before the Ashes Down Under.

  • Pakistan cricketers’ appeal adjourned

    LAHORE: A retired judge on Saturday adjourned until next week and next month appeals lodged by former cricket captain Shoaib Malik and allrounder Rana Naved-ul-Hasan against a one-year ban and hefty fines.

    “Malik’s lawyer completed his arguments and the lawyer for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) wanted time for some legal matters so the appeal has been adjourned for May 29,” Irfan Qadir, the one-man arbitrator, told AFP.

    KARACHI: Syed Sirajul Islam Bukhari and Professor Ijaz Farooqui were elected as president and secretary of the Karachi City Cricket Association (KCCA) respectively in elections held here at the National Stadium on Saturday.

    This is the first time that Sirajul Islam Bukhari, who has been working as secretary since 1983, was elected as president. He won the seat unopposed.

    On one hand, Senate’s standing committee for sports has announced to bring privilege motion against Ijaz Butt and on the other hand, a joint meeting of the standing committees of National Assembly and the Senate has been called for May 31.

    Chairman Senate standing committee for sports senator Abdul Ghaffar Qureshi said that the PCB chairman are making allegations on senators just to hide his failures.

    LAHORE: Pakistan hockey team will take part in the four-nation tournament in China.

    Sources said that this tournament will be played from July 7 to 11 in Chinese city of Dalian where Pakistan, Malaysia and Russia besides hosts will take part in the event.

    Earlier, the Pakistan Hockey Federation has finalized the national team’s tour of Europe where Green Shirts will play series against Spain and Holland before participating in the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games.

    Woods lost sponsors and had contracts cancelled - courtesy to his extra-marital affairs.

    Ex-England skipper John Terry lost an estimated 5 million pounds, while glamour model Katie Price a.k.a Jordan earnings fell about 1.75 million pounds.

    Also, Chelsea's Ashley Cole is believed to have lost 600,000 pounds after cheating on wife Cheryl.

    KARACHI: Shahid Afridi said that he is receiving reports saying he may be made captain of the national cricket team and he has decided to play Test matches in the best interest of the Pakistan team.

    Talking with Geo News, Shahid Afridi said that he wants to benefit his team during the tour of England from his experience.

    He said that he has informed team manager Yawar Saeed about his decisiosn of playing Test matches.

    MADRID: Diego Milito scored both goals as Inter Milan beat Bayern Munich 2-0 in the Champions League final at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday as charismatic coach Jose Mourinho engineered an historic treble.

    Argentine striker Milito embarrassed each of Bayern's centre-backs in turn as the Bavarians' vulnerable defensive core was ruthlessly exposed.

    In their first Champions League final since 1972, Inter won their third European title and first since 1965.

    They also became the first Italian team to achieve the treble of Serie A, Italian Cup and Champions League.

  • Captain for Asia Cup, England tour to be named on May 25

    LAHORE: The captain of the Pakistan cricket team for the Asia Cup and the tour of England will be announced on May 25.

    Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt said that the selection committee will meet on May 25 to short list 30 players for the Asia Cup and the tour of England. The captain will be named same day.

    He said that no decision has so far been made regarding the appointment of the captain.

    The Asia Cup will be held from June 15 in Sri Lanka where Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will participate in the event.
