Beckham begins journey to Finland for surgery

MILAN – David Beckham left his hotel on crutches and headed to the airport Monday morning to catch a plane to Finland for surgery on his torn left Achilles' tendon.

The former England captain was injured in the closing minutes of AC Milan's 1-0 win over Chievo Verona on Sunday.

With his hopes of becoming the first English player to appear in four World Cups shattered and his future in international soccer in doubt, Beckham was slated for surgery either later Monday or Tuesday morning with specialist surgeon Dr. Sakari Orava.

    WASHINGTON: Dr Naseem Ashraf, former chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and a friend of former president Gen Pervez Musharraf (retd) has rejected allegations of embezzlement of millions of rupees in various accounts of the board, Geo News reported.

    He defended himself and said he would go to Pakistan to face the charges. He was of the view that Auditor General of Pakistan had conducted audit, which did not prove any embezzlement in the accounts.

    The hosts, chasing an improbable 513-run target, lost openers Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes before reaching 45-2 in their second innings at lunch on the penultimate day.

    Bangladesh's highest fourth-innings total is 413, against Sri Lanka in Dhaka in 2008.

    Tamim, top-scorer in the first innings with 86, contributed only 14 this time before being bowled in off-spinner Swann's second over.

    ALIGARH: Congress MP and former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin on Monday termed life ban imposed on Pakistani cricketers as unreasonable.

    Talking to media in a horse show here, former Indian captain said it is unreasonable to imposed such sever punishment on violation of discipline. The duration of the punishment should be less, he added.

    Indian cricket board had imposed life ban on Azharuddin in 2000 for his involvement in match fixing.

    Speaking to reporters at a Twenty20 match between Pakistan A and Under-19 here, he said that the cricket board was working for the betterment of cricket in Pakistan.

    “Our focus is more on grass root level in order to inject new talent in the team,” he said.

    To a question, the PCB chief said no compromise would be made on discipline.

    “What we want is that players play for the country,” he added.

    Suarez Navarro, ranked 42nd in the world, called her 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 triumph over the world number three "one of the most important matches of my life," but it was clear Kuznetsova was well off the form that saw her capture the French Open last year and rise to number two in the world in September.

    "It's a blessing, it's a burden," Kansas coach Bill Self said of being No. 1.

    The Jayhawks are the early 2-1 betting favorite to make the Final Four and win their second national title in three years on April 5 in Indianapolis, but there are plenty of candidates to knock them off.

    KINGSTOWN: West Indies cantered to a four-wicket victory in the fifth and final one-day international on Sunday as Zimbabwe's brittle batting line-up crumbled again.

    As expected, the Zimbabweans failed to successfully defend a modest victory target of 162, and West Indies completed victory with 134 balls to spare, wrapping up the series 4-1.

    Zimbabwe's spin bowlers again mesmerised the West Indies' batsman, but the result was secured when Denesh Ramdin pulled a short delivery from leg-spinner Timycen Maruma through mid-wicket for his only boundary in 21 not out.

    LOS ANGELES: The Walt Disney Co plans to close director Robert Zemeckis' ImageMovers Digital facility in Northern California, laying off 450 workers there, or more than 5 percent of its movie studio division.

    Disney will shut down IMD and lay off those workers as it wraps up production on "Mars Needs Moms," an animated film that will hit theaters a year from now.
