Arsenal will make amends for Porto farce: Campbell

LONDON: Sol Campbell expects Arsenal to use the painful memories of their farcical Champions League first round defeat in Porto to kill off the Portuguese champions in the decisive second leg on Tuesday.

Arsene Wenger's side must overcome a 2-1 deficit at the Emirates Stadium following a self-inflicted first leg loss that featured two bizarre mistakes by goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

    KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja wants the country’s cricket chiefs to stop looking beyond Shahid Afridi as their skipper for the ICC World Twenty20, saying that the experienced allrounder is the best man to lead the national team’s title campaign in the Caribbean.

    Ramiz told ‘The News’ in an interview on Monday that Afridi has the credentials to be a successful captain, adding that he can in fact be installed as Pakistan’s skipper for all three formats.

    LAHORE: Inquiry Committee has completed its investigations on Pakistan cricket team’s defeat in Australia and recommended ban on former captain Shoaib Malik and pace bowler Rana Naveed-ul-Hasan.

    The committee, headed by PCB chief operating officer Wasim Bari, was investigating the Pakistan team’s defeat in Australia.

    It has handed over its report to chairman Pakistan Cricket Board Ijaz Butt.

    RAHIMYAR KHAN: The participants of the Tour de Pakistan reached Rahimyar Khan from Bahawalpur in the seventh stage which was won by Sabir Ali of the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC).

    In all, 47 cyclists left Bahawalpur for Rahimyar Khan in the seventh stage, which consists of 200 km. This distance was completed by 42 cyclists.

    Sabir Ali was the first to reach the destination, winning second successive stage in the event. He crossed the distance in five hours, 39 minutes and 26 seconds.

    Imtiaz Hasan of Afghanistan came second and Ovais Aslam of WAPDA secured the third position.

    WELLINGTON: New Zealand want their Davis Cup tie against Pakistan moved from the South Asian country because of terrorism fears, a tennis official said on Monday.

    New Zealand won their Asia-Oceania zone group two tie against Sri Lanka 3-2 in Colombo at the weekend and are now due to face Pakistan in a semifinal in Pakistan in July. But security fears mean Tennis New Zealand (TNZ) wants the tie moved to New Zealand or a neutral venue.

    Well-placed sources in the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) told ‘The News’ on Monday that the national hockey think-tank will meet at the PHF headquarters next week to take a long, hard look at the reasons behind their team’s poor showing in the World Cup which is under progress in New Delhi.

    KARACHI: Tennis New Zealand says the Davis Cup team will not play in Pakistan in July due to security concerns

    Tennis New Zealand will not send its Davis Cup team to Pakistan for July's Asia Oceania semi-final tie.

    TNZ has asked the International Federation to move the tie either here, or a neutral venue due to security concerns in Pakistan.

    Operations manager Tracey Hall says although Pakistan shifted its last tie to Hong Kong, it may not be as accommodating this time. She expects the ITF to make a decision on the venue for the tie later this month.

    BAHAWALPUR: Sabir Ali of Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) won the sixth stage of the Tour de Pakistan International Cycle Race from Multan to Bahawalpur.

    The cyclists crossed the distance of 90 km from Multan to Bahawalpur in one hour and 57 minutes in the sixth stage of the race.

    Sabir Ali of SSGC came first, followed by Zahid Gulfam of WAPDA and Imtiaz Hasan of Afghanistan.

    Imtiaz Hasan earlier won the fifth stage of the race.

    The cyclists will leave Bahawalpur for Rahimyar Khan on Monday in the seventh stage of the Tour de Pakistan International Cycle Race.
