KARACHI: Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani said here Saturday that electricity problem in Karachi will be solved after revamping the old system by KESC management which is the basic root-cause of present day situatin.

He was addressing a press conference after a meeting with the KESC Management at KESC Head Office.

Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan, Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, Federal Minister for Water and Power Raja Parvez Ahsraf and CEO KESC Naveed Ismail were also present on the occasion.

    NEW DELHI: India has handed over its response to the Pakistani dossier to Pakistan authorities.

    According to sources, India’s new foreign secretary Nirupama Rao handed over the information to Pakistani High Commissioner.

    Meanwhile, Indian Home Minister P Chidambaram talking to Indian media said Pakistan had sought more information regarding Mumbai attacks which has been provided to Pakistan.

    LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif ordered the judicial inquiry into the Gojra incident, Geo News reported Saturday.

    He said those who took law in their hands in the Gojra incident, will be dealt with an iron hand.

    He urged the people to control their sentiments, as any irresponsible act can cause to bring slur to their name, religion and country.

    KARCHI: The death toll in Karachi building collapse rose to 14, as the rescue work is still in progress at the site in the Mithadar police limits late Friday night.

    The rescue operation was hindered tremendously, as lane, where building was located, was narrow.

    A five-storey building located at Kamil street situated near Mithadar area of Karachi collapsed with a loud explosion late on Friday night killing three members of a family Jameela 50, her son Muhammad Ahmad 3, daughter Sadia 22, Salma 18 and another person Shoaib 24.

    MPAs from minorities held a session at Sindh Assembly here against incidents of violence against the Christian minority; the session was attended by members from Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Pakistan Muslim League (PML-Q).

    PESHAWAR: NWFP Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain Saturday said the whole province is affected owing to the issue of Malakand IDPs; therefore, the federal government should declare the province as calamity-hit and announce a special package for it.

    Talking to Geo News, he said several districts in the province were hit with turbulence owing to the law and order situation and the districts that were not turbulent were affected by IDP issue, adding the entire province is experiencing turmoil.

    NEW DELHI: When Russia gave India a retired Soviet aircraft carrier five years ago, New Delhi was delighted -- little realising the vessel would turn into a costly white elephant.

    Russia, India's longtime weapons supplier, said in 2004 it would give the country the 44,570-tonne "Admiral Gorshkov" as a gift, provided Delhi paid a Russian shipyard 974 million dollars to refurbish the carrier.

    Since then, the price has skyrocketed for fixing up the 27-year-old ship, which was decommissioned after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

  • Nirupama Rao appointed as India's new foreign secretary

    NEW DELHI: Nirupama Rao took charge as India's foreign secretary on Saturday morning, the second woman to head India's foreign service.

    Rao succeeded Shivshankar Menon at a brief ceremony in South Block. Chokila Iyer was the first woman to serve as India's foreign secretary in 2001.

    A topper of the 1973 Indian Foreign Service batch, Rao also became the first woman spokesperson of the external affairs ministry in 2001. She then went on become the Indian envoy to Sri Lanka and then China before returning to New Delhi.

  • IMF likely to ok Pak request for $4.1b loan: Tarin

    ISLAMABAD: The International Monetary Fund is likely to approve an additional $4.1 billion loan to Pakistan, Shaukat Tarin, economic adviser to the country's prime minister, said Friday.

    The IMF will also approve a $850 million third tranche of a 23-month standby arrangement of $7.6 billion on Aug. 7. The facility was sanctioned in November 2008 to salvage Pakistan from a balance of payment crisis, Tarin said.

    IMF officials weren't immediately available for comment.
