PML-N urges a consensus-based approach in decision-making


ISLAMABAD: PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif has said his party was not consulted on the decision to launch an operation in Khyber Agency, or raise the prices of CNG and petrol.

Speaking to the media at Islamabad airport, Sharif said rising inflation and unemployment were causing huge difficulties to the nation. He also asserted that the pre November 3rd judges have still not been restored, and that the matter stands unresolved.

On his talks with U-S envoy Richard Boucher, Sharif said he had told Boucher that Pakistan's internal affairs will be managed by the government, and should not be interfered with by other countries.

On the operation in Khyber, he said the coalition had decided to use a policy of dialogue in the tribal areas during a high level meeting two and a half months ago, and that he did not know what had changed since then.

He asserted, however, that PML-N was only siding with PPP to end the dictatorship from Pakistan.

Pakistan stands with world community in war against terror, says Gilani


KARACHI: The Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani said that Pakistan today stands committed to the war against terrorism alongside the international community.

Pakistan is a peaceful country and has no intention to enter into an arms race in the region. This was announced by Prime Minister, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, here on Thursday. He was speaking as chief guest at the 89th Midshipmen Commissioning Parade at the Pakistan Naval Academy, PNS Rahbar.

The Prime Minister, however, said that Pakistan would maintain a minimum credible deterrence to ensure peace in the region and also to ensure that the ongoing process of the country’s economic development remains uninterrupted.

He also made it clear that the defence needs of the country will always remain a priority and that the government will provide all necessary resources to the armed forces of Pakistan to enable them to modernize themselves and stay in a state of readiness.

He pointed out that the sovereignty and integrity of the country could be well protected when our foreign and national security policies reflect the aspirations of the people.

Curfew in Bara bazaar for indefinite period

KHYBER AGENCY: The ongoing operation in Bara Tehsil of Khyber Agency entered its sixth day on Thursday, however, no report of any untoward incident was received.

Some of the officials of political administration tried to prevent the media including Geo News from coverage.

Bara Bazar remained opened today and people appeared busy in their routine activities. However, shops were closed following reports of curfew at 12:00 noon and the people also headed towards their homes.

During curfew no patrolling or activity of security forces was witnessed in the Bara Bazar.

Sources of security forces said no action was carried out on Thursday and therefore no arrest was made.

IHC summons Attorney General on July 15 in Dr. AQ Khan case

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court here Thursday directed the Attorney General (AG) of Pakistan to appear in person on July 15 and apprise the court of facts regarding nuclear scientist Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan’s alleged detention.

The Single Bench of Chief Justice Sardar Mohammad Aslam issued the direction after hearing a contempt of court application submitted by advocate M Javed Iqbal Jafferi.

The Bench also issued notice to Deputy Attorney General (DAG) Raja Abdur Rehman to explain his position. The applicant requested the court that contempt of court proceedings should be started against DAG for “misguiding the court and submitting wrong statements” over the issue.

He informed the court that he plans to meet Dr AQ Khan on Friday and requested the Chief Justice to accompany him to ascertain the whole situation himself. The Chief Justice told him to apprise the court if he faced any difficulty in meeting Dr Khan.

Jaffery submitted his papers as counsel for Dr Khan duly signed by him and also produced a four-page letter written by the scientist’s wife Mrs Handrena Khan about the sufferings of the family due to the alleged detention and security checks.

On June 25, the same bench had adjourned hearing of the main petition till July 11 after directing DAG to seek clear instructions from the government and apprise the court.

COAS urges commanders to focus on professional excellence

RAWALPINDI: 109th Corps Commanders Conference was held at the General Headquarters today. The Chief of Army Staff, General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, chaired the meeting.

According to an ISPR statement, this was a routine monthly conference. The meeting discussed in detail professional Army matters. The Chief of Army Staff dilated upon the operational preparedness of the Army and his training concept.

The Chief of Army Staff expressed his satisfaction on the high morale of the Army and urged all commanders to focus on professional excellence.
