World Water Day on March 22

KARACHI: The World Water Day would be observed on March 22. This was announced by an official of the Mass Awareness for Water Conservation and Development Project (MAWCD) here on Friday.

He said that the MAWCD would mark the occasion in collaboration with University of Karachi's Department of Geology and the Institute of Environmental Studies as well as the Society of Economic Geologists and Mineral Technologists (SEGMITE).

Prof Viaqr Husain of the Department of Geology, University of Karachi, would deliver a lecture on conservation and sustainable management of water resources in Pakistan.

An awareness walk would also be held at the Campus from the Department of geology to the silver Jubilee Gate of the University of Karachi.

International World Water Day is held annually on 22 March as a means of focusing attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

An international day to celebrate freshwater was recommended at the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED). The United Nations General Assembly responded by designating 22 March 1993 as the first World Water Day.

This year's World Water Day is dedicated to the theme of water quality, reflecting its importance alongside quantity of the resource in water management.
