ISLAMABAD: Senate Standing Committee on Housing and Works on Monday directed the Housing Works Ministry to suspend Joint State Officer Ayub Khan for his alleged involvement taking bribe from government employees while allotting houses.

There are several complaints of bribery against this official and the federal ministry for housing and works has been directed to immediately suspend the staff officer and begin a legal enquiry against him.

Senator Mir Hasil Khan Bizengo said a mafia was operating in the Housing Ministry and the state office and its officials were involved in corruption and bribery.

The state officer informed the committee that he had vacated 73 houses from illegal occupants through great difficulties even though no police officials were provided for help. He also said that every illegal occupant had a stay order in their pocket and informed the committee that some 18,000 applicants were in the waiting list for getting government houses.

In another matter, the committee was informed that the Ministry of Finance will release Rs 190 million to the Ministry of Housing and Works for the renovation of Chamba House in Lahore, which was occupied by NAB.

The amount has been given as rent. A Finance Ministry official assured the committee that the whole amount will be paid in two installments.

The heads of Federal Government Employees Housing Foundation (FGEHF), National Construction Limited (NCL) and Pakistan Housing Authority (PHA) made their presentations over their ongoing projects. The committee expressed dissatisfaction over FGEHF’s collection of money from 19,000 applicants, while has only 3,000 units for allotment.

Chairman of the committee said it is great injustice that Rs 400 million were taken from 16,000 government employees even though the department is unable to provide them their units for the next five years.
