ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a report by the inspector general of Sindh Police on the killing of lawmaker Mir Bakhtiar Domki’s wife and daughter in Karachi and ordered IGP to arrest the killers.
Expressing concern over the brutal killings on January 30, a three-member bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, observed that it was one of the most sensitive incidents, having its own repercussions as the Balochistan situation was worsening day by day.
Hearing a suo motu notice, the court observed that the incident had resulted in unrest in Balochistan as the general public observed complete shutter-down strike in the province. There was hue and cry for the reasons that innocent female family members of Mir Bakhtiar Domki were murdered.
During the hearing of the case, Sindh Inspector General Mushtaq Ahmed Shah submitted a report but the court rejected it with observation that so far no effective progress had been made by the police to arrest the culprits.
“In our view, the inspector general should have taken all necessary steps in tracing the offenders and causing their arrest,” the court observed.
The inspector general said that extensive efforts were being made and he was confident that he would succeed in arresting the culprits involved in the crime. He requested the bench to give some time regarding the arrest of culprits.
“Mr IG, this is your personal responsibility to arrest the culprits without fear and favour, go ahead,” the CJP said.
Justice Khilji Arif Hussain hinted that there might be a foreign hand behind this incident for causing uncertainty in the country.
The IGP submitted that he knew the importance of the matter as the president had telephoned him twice about the case. He informed the court that they had traced out the killers of three lawyers in Karachi.
The court directed the advocate general and the IGP to appear in-person on the next hearing (February 10).
