Published: February 6, 2012

HYDERABAD: Indonesia is rice-consuming country, so Pakistan can export rice to Indonesia. The Consul General, Rossalis R Adenan at Hyderabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (HCCI) said the economy of Indonesia was improving gradually.

Since last three years it has increased from 6.1 percent in 2009 to 6.7 percent in 2011. He said the trade volume of Indonesia during last year was $375 billion. He said his visit was aimed to further promote trade relationship between two brotherly countries. In order to introduce Indonesian culture, the Consulate General of Indonesia would arrange a cultural program on 16th March 2012 at Expo-Centre Hyderabad. Pakistani kinnow is being sold in Jakarta markets through Singapore. He said, “We know Singapore is a small country and does not produce Kinnow for export. It would be better if such items are exported directly to Indonesia”.

The export ranged to the tune of $205 billion and imports were of the magnitude of $175 billion thus a trade balance of $35 billion was achieved during the previous year.

He said the level of trade between Pakistan and Indonesia was up to $1.0 billion which could be increased manifold by the combined efforts of both the countries.

He invited trade delegation from Hyderabad to join trade delegation from Pakistan for Indonesia in October 2012.

He proposed after signing PTA (Professional Trade Agreement) between Pakistan and Indonesia 216 items from Pakistan and 287 items from Indonesia could be imported from both sides.

It would save Pakistan about $300 million due to decrease in tariff rates. It would be in the interest of Pakistan to import palm oil from Indonesia instead of Malaysia, as it would be cheaper.

The business forums of both countries may enhance their efforts in increasing trade relationships between the two countries, he added.

President HCCI Gohar Ullah said Hyderabad has big potential for economic and industrial growth, especially agro-based industries, fruits, vegetables and grains of all kinds. Also there is a huge volume of import of various commodities from Indonesia, he added.

The city of Hyderabad is famous for its glass bangles with wide variety of colors and designs made for ladies and young girls.

Hyderabad has a large number of textile industries, garments and also 2 and 3 wheelers manufacturing and assembling plants working in SITE Hyderabad. Most of these industries are export-oriented, he informed.

The city has two developed industrial estates, one is in Hyderabad and other is in Kotri.

Recently Hyderabad SITE is being extended by SITE Phase II by another 300 acres and the Sindh Small Industrial Corporation is also being extended by another 50 acres for SME’s and cottage industries.

He said the visit of Consul General to Hyderabad was a great source of inspiration and information for the business community.
