Mayor Anise Parker Is Inviting the South-Asian Community Leaders: Census 2010

Published: February 21, 2010

Houston, Texas (02-16-2010 – Press Release): Mayor Anise Parker invites leaders and media from the Houston South Asian Community to attend a Census 2010 Kick-Off event at the City Hall at Noon on February 23rd, 2010. The 2010 Census is a count of everyone living in the United States. 2010 Census data informs critical decisions from congressional representation to the allocation of more than $400 billion annually in federal funds and helps governments make decisions about what community services to provide.

The 2010 Census form will be one of the shortest in U.S. history, consisting of 10 questions, taking about 10 minutes to complete. Strict confidentiality laws protect the respondents and the information they provide. Partnerships with for-profit and non-profit organizations and government entities are vital to raising awareness of and increasing participation in this historic event. Mayor Parker has invited key South Asian leaders to help spread information about the importance of the 2010 Census to their members throughout the South Asian community.

“It is very important to the City of Houston that we have a complete and accurate count for the 2010 Census. We lose an estimated $1,700 per person per year for everyone not counted,” noted Mayor Parker at a recent Census 2010 event.

Guests will receive sample press materials and information on how to successfully reach out to the community.

The Census influences decision making at all levels of government. Census data directly affects how almost $400 billion per year in federal funding is allocated to communities for neighborhood improvements, public health, education, transportation and funding through grants and aid programs to non-profit organizations. It is vital that the number of South Asians living in Houston is counted correctly to ensure that this money reaches all members of Houston’s community.

The event will take place February 23rd, 2010 at noon at City Hall, Bureau Conference Room, 1st Floor, 901 Bagby Houston, TX 77002.
