Flooding concerns spur evacuations in NJ

TRENTON: Hundreds of people in northern New Jersey have been evacuated from their homes as swollen rivers continue overflow their banks.

About 700 Bound Brook residents were staying in shelters Sunday after the Somerset County community declared a state of emergency and ordered some mandatory evacuations due to the rising level of the Raritan River.

Evacuations were also occurring in several Middlesex and Bergen County towns, and officials in both those counties had issued a boil water notice because water treatment plants experienced minor flooding as a result of Saturday's heavy rains, which may have affected the water treatment process.

Meanwhile, about 400 Atlantic City residents remained out of their homes for a second day, as crews tried to get down a crane at the Revel Entertainment construction site that snapped and twisted, causing severe damage.

The displaced residents live in a condominium complex and two apartment buildings near the construction site, and they were ordered to leave their homes due to safety concerns. Officials say the residents may not be able to return until Tuesday.
